Rare Anatomy Discovered During Cancer Surgery in Samsun: Organs Found to Be Reversed
A 54-year-old construction worker who underwent surgery for bowel cancer was found to have all his internal organs, except for his kidneys and lungs, placed in reverse positions.
It was discovered that a 54-year-old patient who underwent laparoscopic surgery after being diagnosed with large bowel cancer in Samsun had all of his internal organs, except for his kidneys and lungs, located in reverse of the normal placement. The patient, who regained his health following a successful operation, was discharged.
A Medical Condition Revealed Years Later
Muzaffer Uzunbacak, a 54-year-old construction worker, first realized that his heart was on the right side when he was twenty-six years old during a medical report required by his workplace. When Uzunbacak sought medical attention in later years due to intestinal problems, detailed medical examinations revealed that his internal organs, other than his kidneys and lungs, were positioned in the exact opposite of their normal placements.
Pre-Surgery Planning Process
Following examinations conducted by General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerim Güzel, the patient was taken into the operation. Experts successfully designed the intervention targeting the mass in his intestines by making a special surgical plan compatible with this unusual and different layout of the patient's organs.
An Unusual Experience for the Surgical Team
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerim Güzel, who led the operation, stated that this condition, which is seen in one in ten thousand people in medical literature, presented an unfamiliar anatomy for surgeons. He noted that the liver and gallbladder, which are normally on the right, being on the left, and the spleen, which should be on the left, being on the right side required adaptation during the minimally invasive surgery.
Recovered and Discharged
The challenging laparoscopic operation, in which all organs were positioned in the exact opposite direction of expectations, was completed without any problems. Muzaffer Uzunbacak, who regained his health on the fourth day after the surgery, was discharged from the hospital, stating that he will inform physicians of this condition during future medical visits.
