Chinese researchers have discovered a previously unidentified virus following comprehensive examinations of individuals who fell ill after tick bites. Belonging to the orthonairovirus group, the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus causes flu-like symptoms and blood count alterations in humans.

Chinese researchers conducted comprehensive examinations on individuals who fell ill after tick bites, uncovering a new virus previously unidentified in the scientific world. The details of this new pathogen, which belongs to the orthonairovirus group and has been named the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Results of the Laboratory Study in Beijing

Researchers at the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity in Beijing examined 3,163 individuals exposed to tick bites in detail. As a result of the screenings, the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus was detected in 10.4 percent of the patients.

Symptoms of the Disease and Laboratory Findings

Initial symptoms of the infection caused by the virus include high fever, muscle pain, extreme fatigue, and various respiratory complaints. Additionally, laboratory tests revealed thrombocytopenia and evidence of liver cell damage or inflammation.

Risk of Co-occurrence with Other Viruses

Experts stated that the newly discovered Asian longhorned tick nairovirus can appear simultaneously with the Dabie bandavirus in the same patients. It was pointed out that this situation significantly increases the risk of respiratory problems and kidney complications.

Treatment Methods and Prevention Recommendations

Supportive care aimed at alleviating emerging symptoms is predominantly applied in the treatment of patients infected with the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus. Health experts advise citizens to take necessary precautions against tick-borne diseases.
