The free breast cancer screening campaign being carried out by the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil as part of preventive health services is being expanded through mobile units.

Scope of Mobile Screening Activities

The mobile screening unit operating in Erbil provided important health services by conducting free breast cancer screenings for approximately 1,000 women last year. As a result of the screenings, 65 abnormal findings were detected, and the initiative aims to deliver services directly to the community.

Importance of Early Diagnosis for Health

Breast cancer accounts for approximately 20.5 to 22 percent of all cancer cases in Iraq. This situation makes early diagnosis a top priority in terms of public health.

Screening Criteria and Method of Application

Targeting primarily women aged 40 and older, the mobile screening service can also be utilized by women under the age of 40. The mobile team visits different health centers every two weeks.

Collaboration and Support Details

Launched in September 2025, this health service is carried out by the Nursing Development Center in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and with the financial support of the LDS Charities. Women can access screenings without having to go to large hospitals.

General Health Investments and Resources

While an annual campaign was launched in Soran by the Ministry of Health, significant budgets were allocated for cancer treatment and medical equipment in 2025. Additionally, the construction of the new cancer hospital in Erbil continues, and medical devices have been provided to various cities.
