According to the statement made by the Ministry of Health, Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev applied to the Prime Minister with a request to resign from his position as State Chief Health Inspector. Kunchev cited reaching retirement age and disagreeing with the planned reform in state health control as reasons for his decision.

Minister of Health Katya Ivkova stated that she respects the professional path of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Kunchev. Ivkova also emphasized that this announcement is not merely a personal decision, but contains an assessment that the current model works effectively and the reform would complicate the system.

Kunchev's Career History and Responsibilities

Associate Professor Doctor Kunchev has been serving as the State Chief Health Inspector since 2011. By law, he is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and managing the state health control and surveillance of infectious diseases in the country.

Referring to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development data, the Minister warned that the low number of reported hospital infections in Bulgaria may be due to under-reporting. Less than 30 percent of the hospitals participating in the study are involved in national or regional networks.
