The genetic misconception in cancer cases and the impact of lifestyle
It has been announced that the majority of cancer cases are not genetic, and that environmental factors and lifestyle play a major role.
Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Erkan Sarıyıldız stated that the belief that cancer is entirely genetic is a major misconception, noting that only 5 to 10 percent of diagnosed cases have a genetic origin.
Genetic and environmental factors
Only 5 to 10 percent of all diagnosed cancer cases have a genetic origin. Out of every 100 cases, 90 to 95 are the combined product of accumulated cellular damage, environmental factors, and lifestyle.
The difference between familial and hereditary
The concepts of familial and hereditary are frequently confused. The presence of multiple cancers in the same family does not always indicate a hereditary genetic alteration; family members share common living spaces and habits.
Red flag situations
A cancer diagnosis in a close relative before the age of 50, similar types in two or more relatives along the same lineage, and cases occurring at a young age are among the red flag scenarios.
Steps to manage risk
By writing down the family tree, cancer types across three generations should be noted. In red flag situations, genetic counseling should be sought, smoking should be quit, and regular exercise should be maintained.
