Experts warn against the unconscious use of supplements in the face of the increased risk of vitamin D deficiency during autumn and winter due to insufficient exposure to sunlight. Dr. İrem Köroğlu emphasizes that high doses can lead to serious health problems.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency, which is of critical importance for bone and muscle health, may not always present with symptoms. Fatigue, muscle weakness, and widespread pain may be observed.

However, since these symptoms can also stem from different health problems, a deficiency cannot be diagnosed solely by looking at them.

Is Sunbathing Enough for Winter?

Sunbathing during the summer months does not guarantee adequate vitamin D levels throughout the winter. Vitamin D production is affected by factors such as the angle of the sun, age, and skin type.

Safe sun exposure should be achieved without increasing the risk of skin cancer, and sunburns in particular should be avoided.

At-Risk Population Groups

Those who go out into the sun rarely, individuals who stay in indoor environments, the elderly, and individuals with dark skin pigmentation are at a higher risk of deficiency.

People with obesity and those experiencing malabsorption are also in the risk group.

Unconscious Supplement Use

It is stated that a "more is better" approach to vitamin D is incorrect, and incorrect use can lead to toxicity.

Serious consequences such as hypercalcemia, excessive thirst, nausea, and kidney problems can occur.

Nutrition and Recommendations

Oily fish such as salmon, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products are among the sources of vitamin D.

It is recommended that individuals who suspect a deficiency consult a physician rather than taking high-dose supplements on their own.
