Plans to raise social media access age to 15 in Southern Cyprus
An Action Plan aimed at raising the access age to social media platforms to 15 to protect children has been approved in South Cyprus.
The Greek Cypriot Cabinet of Ministers has approved an Action Plan that envisions setting the age limit for accessing platforms at 15 to protect children from potential dangers in a region where social media usage rates have reached 98 percent.
Cabinet Approval
The Greek Cypriot Cabinet of Ministers, meeting under the chairmanship of Greek Cypriot Administration Leader Nikos Christodoulides, made a critical decision to enhance children's safety.
High Usage Rate
According to findings across South Cyprus, it was stated that the social media usage rate has reached the 98 percent level.
Parliamentary Process
It was stated that the draft legislation to be prepared within the scope of the approved Action Plan will be opened for discussion in the Greek Cypriot Parliament in the future process.
Age Verification Mechanism
It is envisaged to develop a special age verification mechanism through the "Digital Citizen" application, which is planned to be implemented within the next year.
Education and Information
It was noted that comprehensive educational programs and information campaigns targeting parents and educators, as well as students, will be organized within the framework of the plan.
