RTÜK President Daniş's Statement on Social Media Platforms' Licenses
Stating that international social media giants avoiding obtaining licenses makes the fight against disinformation difficult, the RTÜK President announced that new legal steps will be taken.
Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) President Mehmet Daniş emphasized that the reluctance of global social media and video streaming platforms to undergo national licensing is one of the biggest problems, and announced that new regulations will be made in this area.
Licensing Problem and Finding an Interlocutor
Stating that the primary problem is that international social media companies are reluctant to undergo national licensing, officials expressed that official institutions have difficulty finding an interlocutor to face due to this situation.
Emphasis on Combating Disinformation
It was stated that the lack of licenses for video streaming platforms in the country prevents institutions from taking effective and rapid steps, especially in processes of combating disinformation.
Traditional Media and Advertising Shares
While it was stated that funds in the advertising sector are rapidly shifting to digital channels, it was reported that the share of traditional media branches such as television and radio in advertising revenues has fallen below 15 percent.
New Regulations on the Agenda
Drawing attention to the fact that developments in social media and digital channels have led to deep crises on a global scale, information was shared that preparations for new regulations on the subject are ongoing.
It was noted that this issue is among the priority agenda items not only of institutions, but also of the Presidency boards, parliamentary commissions, and the general public.
