RTÜK President Mehmet Daniş Issues Warning to Social Media Platforms Regarding Licensing and Regulation
Emphasizing that the failure of international social media to enter the licensing system hinders the fight against disinformation, RTÜK announced that new steps will be taken in this area.
Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) President Mehmet Daniş stated that the failure of international social media and video streaming platforms to be included in the national licensing system complicates oversight, announcing that new regulations in this area will be introduced soon.
Licensing Problem in Social Media and Digital Broadcasting
RTÜK President Mehmet Daniş stated that new regulations targeting social media and video streaming platforms are on the agenda, noting that the failure of international companies to be included in the national licensing system poses a significant problem in oversight and the fight against disinformation.
New Legal Regulations Will Be Made Soon
Speaking about the steps planned to be taken in the field of digital broadcasting, Daniş stated that new regulations regarding social media and video platforms will come to the agenda, expressing that steps on these issues will be taken both in the world and in Turkey.
No Counterpart Can Be Found in International Companies
Emphasizing that the core problem is the reluctance of international social media companies to comply with national licensing, Daniş stated that if a video streaming platform lacks a license, effective action cannot be taken in the fight against disinformation.
Share of Digital Advertising Has Surpassed Traditional Media
Drawing attention to the increasing weight of digital platforms in the advertising sector, Daniş pointed out a serious shift in advertisements toward digital media, noting that the share of traditional media, namely television and radio, in advertising has dropped below 15 percent.
The Issue Is on the Agenda of the Parliament and the Presidency
Conveying that discussions regarding social media and digital broadcasting are not solely on RTÜK's agenda, Daniş noted that the issue is also being addressed by Presidential boards, parliamentary commissions, and the public.
