Social Media Access Age Limit Being Raised in Southern Cyprus
A new regulation aimed at protecting children from the potential dangers of social media has been approved by the Greek Cypriot Council of Ministers and brought to the agenda of parliament.
The Greek Cypriot Council of Ministers has approved an Action Plan raising the age of access to social media platforms to 15 in Southern Cyprus, where the social media usage rate has reached 98 percent, aiming to protect children.
Approval of the Action Plan
The Greek Cypriot Council of Ministers, meeting under the chairmanship of Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, officially approved the Action Plan, which foresees setting the age limit for accessing social media platforms at 15.
Drawing attention to high social media usage rates, the administration took this step to protect children from potential risks in the digital environment.
Legal Process and Age Verification
A comprehensive bill will be drafted within the framework of the Action Plan, which will be submitted for discussion in the Greek Cypriot Parliament.
It is aimed to develop a robust age verification mechanism through the Digital Citizen application, which is planned to be implemented within the next year.
Education and Awareness Activities
Within the scope of the new regulation, steps will be taken to increase social awareness rather than contenting itself only with legal restrictions.
It is planned to organize special training programs and comprehensive awareness campaigns for students, parents, and educators.
