Statement on Social Media Monitoring and School Safety from Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated in his remarks regarding the armed attack in Manisa that families must closely monitor their children's social media relationships.
During a live broadcast, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin evaluated the armed attack in Turgutlu, Manisa, emphasizing that families must definitely track their children's activities on digital platforms and their social media relationships.
The Incident in Turgutlu, Manisa
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that the armed attack near İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa's Turgutlu district should not be characterized as a school attack.
Reminding that the perpetrator took the hunting rifle from his grandfather's house, Minister Tekin noted that the perpetrator had attended school for only 2 or 3 days due to the enrollment process, and therefore it is not possible to speak of peer bullying.
Responsibilities of Families and Gun Safety
It was pointed out that it is of great importance for families who keep licensed firearms in their homes to store these weapons in places inaccessible to children.
Stating that public safety concerns everyone, Minister Tekin expressed that families need to be more careful on this issue and fulfill their responsibilities.
Social Media and Digital Platform Control
Drawing attention to the importance of parents conducting social media monitoring for their children, Tekin stated that children might share personal data on platforms where they play games or on social media.
Expressing that children could encounter threats and blackmail in these channels, Minister Tekin noted that it is beneficial to monitor correspondence and relationships until adulthood is reached.
Physical Security Measures Taken in Schools
He emphasized that studies are carried out for the measures that need to be taken at the beginning of each educational term in schools, and these precautions have been tightened after April 15.
Stating that schools across the country are categorized according to their physical conditions, Tekin conveyed that standard measures such as indoor and surrounding camera systems, turnstiles, and emergency buttons have been implemented.
Other Practices in School Safety
It was recalled that in addition to physical measures, efforts such as a parent appointment system, restriction of mobile phone usage, school uniforms, and apron policies for teachers are being carried out.
It was reported that tracking systems are being installed on student transport services, while research on the perception of violence is conducted and risk maps are created.
