Turned her hobby of silver crafting into a professional career
Dilek Altay, who has been producing filigree and jewelry for ten years, sells the products she prepares in her workshops in Istanbul and Düzce via social media and her shop in Akçakoca.
Dilek Altay, who has been involved in silver crafting as a hobby for about 10 years, developed her talent in this field through private lessons and turned it into a profession. Setting up workshops in Istanbul and Düzce, the entrepreneur reaches customers across Turkey through her shop in Akçakoca and via social media.
Started as a hobby
Dilek Altay initially approached silver crafting as a form of therapy and took private lessons in this field from an instructor holding the title of state artist.
Working at the airport before retiring, Altay focused entirely on the art of silver after this period, turning her savings into professional production.
Workshop and production process
Continuing her production activities in her workshops in Istanbul and Düzce, Altay incorporates fine engraving applications alongside classical techniques.
After having the materials prepared at the micron level, the artist processes them in her own workshop, producing various jewelry items, particularly filigree, and fulfilling orders.
The shop experience in Akçakoca
Evaluating the idea of opening a stand while visiting the Akçakoca Historic Neighborhood Market last year, Altay met with the association president and secured a spot in the market.
Expanding her activities by opening a shop in the same market this year, the entrepreneur states that although silver is a costly metal, enthusiasts of her products can easily find her.
Market expanding with social media
Handmade jewelry produced in the workshops is offered to buyers both from the physical shop and through social media platforms.
Preparing and sending orders coming from different cities like Ankara, Altay emphasizes that digital channels play an important role in increasing order volume.
Contribution to the family economy
Adopting a small-scale workshop and shop model, Dilek Altay experiences professional satisfaction thanks to this venture while also supporting the household economy.
The income generated from sales increases the sustainability of the activities while also allowing for the diversification of the work.
