According to data published in the medical journal The Lancet, the transplant procedure performed on January 25, 2025, proved that pig organs can function long-term in the human body. The transplanted kidney remained active in the patient's body until October.
The importance of genetic modification
Researchers applied 69 different genomic modifications to Yucatan miniature pigs to make the organs compatible with the human immune system. During this process, the organs were camouflaged by adding human DNA to prevent the rejection of pig cells.
Seeking a solution to the organ transplant crisis
While approximately 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant in the U.S., the annual number of transplants remains far below the need. Dr. Leonardo Riella emphasized that such studies could serve as a vital bridge for patients until a human donor is found.
Treatment process and aftermath
Following the loss of function of the kidney, Andrews underwent dialysis treatment for 82 days. It was reported that the patient, who successfully completed the transplant process with a kidney received from a human donor this January, is in good health.
