Investigation Launched into Insurance Condition for iPhone Sales in Technology Stores

Following the release of new iPhone models, the Ministry of Trade has launched an investigation into allegations that devices are being sold in certain technology stores on the condition of purchasing coverage or additional insurance.

Consumer Complaints and Allegations

With the release of new iPhone models, applications reflected on complaint platforms claimed that some phones reported to be in stock were not sold without purchasing an additional insurance service. Some consumers stated that the sale of the device was tied to the condition of getting insurance.

High Additional Cost Allegations

One consumer claimed that they were told they could purchase the device if they had additional insurance costing around 28,000 liras. Another consumer reported that after refusing the insurance service, they were informed the device had been sold to another customer.

Ministry Reminder on Legislation

Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Advisor of the Ministry of Trade, reminded that under the Law on the Protection of Consumers, the sale of a good or service cannot be made contingent upon the purchase of another good or service.

Inspection and Sanction Process

The Ministry stated that practices involving the sale of technology products by imposing an insurance requirement are being examined within the scope of legislation. It was reported that administrative sanctions will be applied to the relevant businesses if violations of the legislation are detected.
