NYC bans AI use for students until they reach high school

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the artificial intelligence ban covering students from kindergarten through the eighth grade for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Who Does the Ban Cover?

This new moratorium implemented in New York City directly affects approximately 600,000 public school students from the 3-K level through the eighth grade.

While high school students are permitted to use artificial intelligence under certain exceptional circumstances, these students will be provided with artificial intelligence literacy lessons twice a year.

Teachers and Chatbots

Under the new regulations, teachers are prohibited from using artificial intelligence tools to grade assignments, and companion and mental support chatbots are also banned in all classrooms.

In contrast, teachers are allowed to benefit from artificial intelligence while planning lessons, and certain exceptions are permitted for disabled students and computer science programs.

City Council and the Background of the Decision

This decision came following the City Council's pressure for a two-year moratorium against generative artificial intelligence due to inadequate data privacy protections and research in the draft guidance.

Mayor Mamdani chose to announce this at least one-year ban ahead of the new school year starting on September 10.

Reactions of Education Experts

Former Schools Chancellor David Banks opposed the moratorium approach, arguing that it was a mistake that would leave the city even further behind.

Meanwhile, Robin Hood CEO Richard Buery Jr. evaluated a three-phase plan aimed at educating parents about this technology.
