Conversion of Human Feces into Biochar
Instead of directly using waste, researchers at Manipal University Jaipur subjected fecal sludge obtained from treatment facilities to special processes. The dried sludge was cooked at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment to turn it into biochar in the form of a fine powder.
Test Results and Increase in Durability
According to the research published in the journal Scientific Reports, when 10 percent of the cement was replaced with biochar, the strength of the concrete increased by 42 percent. With a 5 percent change, compressive strength rose by 20 percent and flexural strength by 36 percent.
Scientific Processes Behind the Durability
Biochar, which can retain water thanks to its porous structure, allows the chemical reaction to continue by slowly releasing the moisture needed by the concrete during the hardening process. Rich in silica, this material supports the structure in becoming denser and void-free.
Expert Warnings for the Future
Despite the positive data obtained, experts state that the material must be tested in detail under real field conditions such as extreme temperatures, freeze-thaw cycles, and the risk of heavy metal leaching.
