Sponge City Projects Implemented Against Heavy Rainfall in China
In order to prevent water accumulation caused by heavy rainfall across China, sponge city infrastructure works including parks, permeable roads, and artificial wetlands have been implemented.
Within the scope of sponge city projects developed against the problem of water accumulation caused by heavy rainfall in China, parks, permeable roads, artificial wetlands, and green areas were built.
The Purpose of Sponge City Projects
An innovative infrastructure method has begun to be applied in China against the problem of water accumulation created by heavy rainfall in city centers. These projects aim to retain water in the city during heavy rainfall and use it in a controlled manner.
Permeable Surfaces and Materials
In sponge city applications, special areas capable of absorbing, retaining, and storing rainwater were included alongside concrete surfaces. Permeable materials that allow water to pass directly into the soil were preferred on some surfaces.
Green Areas and Parks
Parks and green areas were established throughout the cities within the scope of the projects. These areas prevent rainwater from accumulating directly on the surface, allowing water to be absorbed and retained within the city.
Artificial Wetlands and Storage
Artificial wetlands were designed as additional areas where water can be safely retained during heavy downpours. Thus, the storage of water at designated points and its controlled management are ensured.
