Access Inequality in Technology Can Deepen the Literacy Gap
UNESCO data shows that millions of youths lack basic literacy, and reveals that inequality in access to artificial intelligence tools could give rise to new risks.
According to data released within the scope of International Literacy Day, while millions of adults globally continue to remain below the basic literacy level, warnings have been issued that inequalities in access to artificial intelligence technologies could further deepen the existing gap.
The Scope of International Literacy Day
With a decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1966, September 8 is celebrated every year as International Literacy Day.
Observed for the sixtieth time this year, this special day is being addressed in Mexico on September 8-9 under the theme of Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity.
Global Literacy Data and Rates
The literacy rate among adults has shown an increase compared to past years, reaching the 88 percent level.
Despite this, approximately 739 million youth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills.
Regional Distribution and Gender Inequality
225 million of the illiterate adult population live in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and 347 million live in South Asia.
Additionally, women account for a large proportion of 63 percent of this disadvantaged population on a global scale.
Educational Losses Among Children
Despite educational efforts maintained in low- and middle-income countries, 4 out of every 10 children fail to reach the minimum level in reading proficiency.
Technological Developments and Artificial Intelligence Risks
Technological developments such as digitalization and artificial intelligence are rapidly changing the scope and boundaries of the concept of literacy.
It is emphasized that artificial intelligence holds significant potential in overcoming educational challenges.
Lack of Internet and Artificial Intelligence Access
According to the UNESCO report, one-third of the world's population lacks an internet connection.
It has been reported that the most advanced artificial intelligence models can only be accessed by individuals who have infrastructure, language advantages, and paid subscription opportunities.
