Brazilian Activist Calls for Release of Detained Flotilla Organizers in Tunisia

Brazilian activist Thiago Avila has called for the release of four Tunisian organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which attempted to break the blockade on Gaza. Wael Naouar, one of the individuals detained since March, is reportedly on a hunger strike and in critical health condition.

Global Flotilla and Arrests in Tunisia

The organizers of the flotilla, which set off in August 2025 to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, had returned to their home countries following Israeli intervention. However, Tunisian authorities re-arrested four of the organizers in February after a new aid mission was announced.

The organizers—Nabil Channoufi, Ghassan Henchiri, Ghassan Boughdiri, and Wael Naouar—have been held in Tunisia's Mornaguia Prison for more than five months.

Legal Process and Charges

Detained by the financial crimes unit of the Tunisian National Guard, the activists are accused of money laundering, fraud, and the misuse of campaign donations. The Tunisian government has not yet made an official statement regarding the matter.

In a video message he published, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila drew attention to the 170th day of detention and called for their immediate release.

Avila stated that one of the detainees, Wael Naouar, has been on a hunger strike for at least seven days and that his health condition remains serious.
