California Woman Arrested for Alleged Espionage on Behalf of China and Surveilling Taiwan Leader's Son

United States authorities have arrested a California-based woman on charges of spying for China and surveilling the son of Taiwan's president.
Airport Detention Operation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that 34-year-old Wanying Zhang, a resident of Irvine, California, was detained on Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport.
Official Charges Filed
Authorities charged Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather, with acting as an agent of a foreign government without notifying U.S. authorities.
It was reported that Zhang targeted Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's son under the instructions of Chinese officials and conducted surveillance activities.

Taiwanese Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo stated that the incident is a typical case of transnational repression disregarding the sovereignty of nations and thanked the U.S. government.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was unaware of the matter and opposed the use of Chinese spy allegations to smear the country.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Zhang used methods to make detection difficult and would appear before a federal court on Monday.
