Although scientists have long known about these feedback loops, emissions from natural sources are largely unaccounted for in climate projections. This leads models to underestimate future warming and overestimate the remaining carbon budget.

Emissions from natural sources are expected to increase global warming by 20 to 30 percent by the end of the century. Depending on the measures countries take against the climate crisis, this could add 0.2C to 0.4C to global average temperatures.

Even small temperature changes in the global climate can significantly alter the risks of severe heatwaves, floods, and droughts. The United Nations has stated that the agreement to limit temperature increases to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will likely be breached within the next few years.

Current government policies could cause global temperatures to rise by 2.6C compared to pre-industrial times. This increase could lead to severe hardships for billions of people, such as rising sea levels and crop failures.
Bill Ripple from Oregon State University reminded us that every fraction of a degree matters and emphasized the urgency of making rapid cuts in fossil fuel emissions against the risk of triggering natural processes that release greenhouse gases.
