According to an annual report published by scientists, seven of the nine planetary boundaries supporting human survival have been breached at their highest levels yet, increasing the risk of irreversible environmental change.
Critical Boundaries in Danger Zone
According to the planetary health check process established in 2009, seven of the nine core boundaries that enable life to flourish on Earth have reached their highest levels of transgression.
Areas at Risk
The seven core indicators currently in the danger zone include climate change, change in biosphere integrity, land system change, freshwater change, modification of biogeochemical flows, the introduction of novel entities, and ocean acidification.
Areas Showing Improvement
Out of the nine areas evaluated, only two—stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading—have shown positive development over the past decade.
Warnings from Scientists
A coalition of 60 scientists conducting the analysis under the auspices of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research warned that the consequences of breaching these boundaries are becoming increasingly clear.
Lead author Boris Sakschewski pointed out that the risk of large-scale, permanent, and potentially irreversible changes is increasing.
Call to Action and Release of the Report
Co-author Johan Rockström emphasized that humanity still possesses the knowledge and capacity to accelerate actions and reverse this situation in order to return to safe operating spaces.
The report in question was shared with the public on Monday ahead of Climate Week in New York City.
