At a Walmart store in the state of Virginia, United States, 77-year-old Bert Atienza lost his life after being beaten by an employee's parents following an argument over a shopping cart.
Dispute During Shopping
The incident occurred while 77-year-old Bert Atienza and his wife of 42 years, Josephine, were shopping at the store in the city of Norfolk after a morning church program.
A 17-year-old employee rushing through the store almost hit the elderly woman with a shopping cart, leading to a verbal argument between the parties.
Employee Calls Family
Following the brief verbal dispute, the young employee reportedly threw a box toward the couple as they walked away and then notified his family about the situation.
Upon this development, the employee's mother and father arrived at the store shortly after and set off inside the store to look for the elderly couple.
Attack Captured on Security Cameras
Footage captured by the store's security cameras showed moments when Bert Atienza, who was examining products on the shelves, was approached from behind and attacked.
Security recordings clearly showed the suspects pushing the elderly man from behind, punching him, and continuing to beat him after he fell to the ground.
Elderly Man Taken to Hospital Could Not Be Saved
Bert Atienza, who lost consciousness at the scene following the attack, was taken to the hospital but passed away the next day despite all interventions.
As a result of examinations by medical authorities, the elderly man's cause of death was officially recorded as blunt force trauma and homicide.
Suspects Detained
Launching an investigation following the incident, police teams arrested 44-year-old Travis White and 42-year-old Erika Mitchell and sent them to jail.
The young girl working at the store was also detained and transferred to a juvenile detention center in Norfolk, facing various charges.
