European Commission President von der Leyen's Vision for AI in Healthcare
In her speech at the European Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that artificial intelligence in healthcare should not replace doctors.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen evaluated the use of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector during her annual State of the Union address at the European Parliament. Von der Leyen stated that the technology should be implemented the European way, without replacing doctors.
State of the Union Address
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared priorities and key initiatives for the upcoming year with the public during the annual State of the Union session held at the European Parliament. In her speech, she opened a separate parenthesis for technological developments in the field of healthcare.
Must Not Replace Doctors
Having also served as a physician in the past, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that while artificial intelligence provides rapid access to data for clinical decisions, it must never replace doctors. She stated that she would not want a cancer diagnosis to be made by a robot.
Early Diagnosis and Mammography
Stating that AI-supported mammography screenings can detect cancers at an earlier stage and thereby increase the survival rate of women, von der Leyen expressed that these technologies are needed in the healthcare sector.
Five Priority Sectors
According to a social media post by Health Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, healthcare is among the five priority sectors where Europe aims to accelerate the use of industrial artificial intelligence. New initiatives will be announced in November.
