European Union Leaders React to Serbia's Funeral for War Criminal

European Union leaders expressed their reaction to the official military funeral and state support held in Belgrade for Ratko Mladic, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and died in prison.

Ratko Mladic, who was convicted of war crimes and died in prison, was laid to rest in Belgrade with a military funeral and the participation of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church. While congregants and soldiers carried the coffin on their shoulders, some government ministers were also present at the ceremony.

Harsh Reaction from the European Union

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa deeply regretted the official support and participation of high-ranking officials at the funeral. The leaders stated that this situation shows that Europe is not confronting a dark period in its recent history.

Approach of the Serbian Administration

While President Aleksandar Vucic did not attend the funeral, his son Danilo was present at the ceremony site. Minister of Justice Nenad Vujic stood by the family and argued that the authorities only ensured security and order.

Uncertainties in the Membership Process

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that the funeral was a significant test for Serbia and canceled her planned visit. The event also reignited discussions about the country's future on the path to EU membership.
