Experts in Ho Chi Minh City have started utilizing advanced geophysical technologies, such as ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity tomography, to search for the missing remains of fallen soldiers.

Challenges in Search Operations

For decades, search operations faced numerous difficulties as underground traces buried over time were erased. This situation drove scientists to seek more powerful and modern methods.

Functioning of Geophysical Methods

Instead of large-scale excavations, the research team used ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity imaging techniques to examine underground changes. While these technologies do not directly view remains, they search for traces left from the burial process.

Electrical Resistivity Tomography

With the ERT method, an electrical current is transmitted into the soil. Differences in conductivity are recorded to create 2D and 3D geophysical cross-sections, identifying areas showing abnormal resistivity.

Investigations at Le Thi Rieng Park

Research conducted at Le Thi Rieng Park revealed numerous areas showing abnormal electrical resistivity, including trench-like structures, at depths of approximately 3 to 8 meters.

Comparison with Historical Records

Due to the passage of nearly 60 years, the original traces have deteriorated; therefore, the data cannot be used alone and is cross-referenced with historical maps, archives, and eyewitness accounts.

A New Approach and Campaign

This technological approach shifts the search process away from direct excavation toward area identification and boundary delineation. This work is carried out within the general framework of the 500-Day Campaign.

Integration with DNA Technology

Alongside the search and collection processes, the Ministry of Science and Technology is coordinating the development of DNA identification technologies to support the establishment of genetic databases.
