Period of Captivity and Hardships Faced
Evan Gershkovich emphasized that his prison experience in Russia was not the same as everyone else's. He stated that some individuals were tortured, worn down as human beings, and deprived of food and hot water.
Prisoner Swap and Release
Gershkovich shared that he was informed about the planned prisoner swap three weeks in advance and that this process turned into an extremely long wait for him.
He noted that although the swap carried out in August 2024 initially created pure joy, this feeling gave way to new challenges as he confronted the reality of returning to normal life.
Return to Normal Life and Adaptation
Stating that after being released he experienced difficulties such as sleep problems, panic attacks in crowded environments, and quick temper, Gershkovich received support from post-traumatic stress disorder specialists during this process and turned his experiences into a book.
Future Plans and the Possibility of Russia
Gershkovich, the child of a family that migrated from the Soviet Union to the US, stated that despite ongoing uncertainties in the post-Putin era, he hopes to return to Russia one day.
