Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ağırman warned parents against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic muscle disease seen in boys, in a statement made within the scope of September 7 World Duchenne Awareness Day.

What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetically originating disease that appears at an early age in boys and leads to progressive muscle weakness.

Due to the deficiency of certain proteins found in the muscles, various problems can arise in children's mobility.

Symptoms Between 2 and 6 Years of Age

The symptoms of the disease usually start to manifest themselves in boys between the ages of 2 and 6.

Starting to walk late, having difficulty walking or running are among the most common situations encountered.

Number of Cases in Turkey

It is known that approximately 150 boys are born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy every year in Turkey.

This situation makes it mandatory to increase awareness of the disease and to identify children at risk at an early stage.

Holistic Health Effects

DMD is not only a disorder limited to muscles, but also affects the heart, respiratory system, bones, and different parts of the musculoskeletal system.

It is of great importance that patients are monitored with a multidisciplinary approach involving multiple branches.

Early Diagnosis and Rehabilitation

Following the diagnosis, it is aimed to start the rehabilitation process as soon as possible.

The main goal is to protect children's independence in daily life and to support their muscle strength.
