In response to rising hybrid threats, the Berlin government demanded the establishment of a rapid response unit in the Baltic Sea region and decided to close Russia's consulate general in Bonn.
Drone Attack at Leipzig Airport
The discovery of an explosive-laden drone near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany alarmed authorities. Based on police findings and intelligence data, the Berlin government officially announced that Russia was responsible for this attempted attack.
Germany's Countermeasures
Following these events, Germany implemented a series of stern countermeasures against Russia. Within this scope, Russia's consulate general in Bonn was closed, and the status of the Russian House cultural center in Berlin was terminated.
New Task Force for the Baltic Sea
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt proposed the establishment of a rapid response task force in the Baltic Sea region to transform the joint threat environment into a joint security environment. This unit will coordinate against hybrid threats such as sabotage, cyberattacks, and disinformation.
Rising Hybrid Threats Across Europe
A report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies revealed that numerous suspicious drones have been detected near sensitive facilities in Germany, France, and the UK. Authorities state that military sites are being monitored and air defense systems tested across Europe.
Russia's Denial of Allegations
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže described the attack as state-sponsored terrorism on German soil. Russia, meanwhile, categorically denied responsibility, arguing that the accusations leveled against it are entirely fabricated.
Suspicious Incidents in Energy Infrastructure
German police are also separately investigating suspicious sabotage incidents targeting the country's electrical infrastructure in Dormagen and Bergheim. Authorities have not yet officially linked these incidents in the power grid to Russia.
