August Hanning, the former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND), and his deputy Manfred D. have been arrested and sent to prison on suspicion of leaking state secrets to a foreign intelligence agency.

Espionage Charges Against the Former Intelligence Chief

August Hanning, former head of Germany's foreign intelligence service BND, appeared before a judge on allegations of transferring state secrets to a foreign intelligence service and was sent to prison following the issuance of an arrest warrant against him.

Eighty-year-old August Hanning served as president of the Federal Intelligence Service between 1998 and 2005 and faces charges of treason and espionage.

Former Deputy Manfred D. Also Detained

A former deputy, referred to only as Manfred D. due to privacy regulations in Germany, was also arrested and placed in prison on Tuesday, becoming part of the investigation.

Manfred D. is accused of aiding and abetting an attempted treason as well as espionage, and is under close scrutiny by investigative authorities.

Country They Worked For Not Disclosed

Prosecution authorities have not yet shared with the public which specific country the two suspects spied for or what classified information they provided to foreign intelligence services.

At the current stage of the ongoing investigation, the identities of the foreign intelligence services and the scope of the transferred information officially remain confidential.

Agreement and Document Flow Between the Two

It is alleged that the two individuals made an agreement in 2010, whereby Manfred D. would continuously provide valuable foreign intelligence information to Hanning in exchange for payment.

Manfred D. served as the chief of staff to several subsequent BND presidents from 2012 until this year, holding significant positions during this process.

Financial Benefit and Document Details

According to the federal prosecutor's office, Hanning is accused of using this acquired information for his own financial interests in his private consulting work.

According to the current state of the investigation, Manfred D. handed over approximately 2,000 documents to his former superior over a twelve-year period until June 2022.

Defense Attorney's Statement and Objection to Charges

The former intelligence chief's attorney, Leon Kruse, issued a statement on Wednesday firmly rejecting the accusations and claims made against him.

Attorney Kruse stated that while Hanning possessed classified documents, the allegations that he leaked information to Germany's detriment or received payments were baseless, and that his client was being unjustly prosecuted.

Comprehensive Investigation Promised by German Authorities

German authorities have committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to shed light on all aspects of this security breach.

High-ranking officials, including a spokesperson for Chancellor Friedrich Merz, emphasized that the background of the scandal will be uncovered.
