Global Oil Prices Rise as Tensions Continue Between US and Iran
Developments in the Strait of Hormuz and energy disruptions have pushed oil prices to their highest levels in weeks on international markets.
As conflicts and energy disruptions between the US and Iran drive global oil prices upward, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and regional tensions continue to escalate.
Oil Prices
While the barrel price of Brent crude hovers around 97 dollars on international markets, US West Texas Intermediate crude is finding buyers above 92 dollars. Market tightening is also being reflected in retail gasoline pump prices across the United States.
Fuel Price Hike in Iran
Iranian state media reported that a new and higher pricing tariff has been introduced for heavy fuel consumers due to the economic pressure caused by months of ongoing war. Officials stated that this new tariff will affect 15 percent of consumers.
Military Operations
The US Central Command announced that, upon the instructions of President Trump, a total of 94 commercial vessels attempting to violate the blockade on Iranian ports were rerouted. The statement reported that three vessels were disabled and two vessels were boarded.
Regional Conflicts
While the Houthis in Yemen accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out airstrikes in various parts of the country, the Israeli military continues its attacks on targets in Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Oman Maritime Security Agency reported that 16 crew members were rescued from a Saudi-flagged tanker attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic Developments
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi stated that re-engaging between Iran and the United Nations nuclear watchdog is essential for the resumption of inspections at nuclear facilities.
