Information on Transmission Routes and Symptoms of Cholera
In light of World Health Organization data, details were shared regarding the symptoms of cholera, transmission routes, and the current situation of diarrhea cases in Turkey.
Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bayındır, Chief Physician of Ayrancı Güven Hospital, made important evaluations regarding the transmission routes, symptoms, and prevention methods of cholera based on World Health Organization data.
Cholera Risk Worldwide
According to World Health Organization data, while a large number of cholera cases have been reported in the African Region in recent years, it was stated that the disease can start in one region and spread worldwide.
Transmission Routes of the Disease and Contaminated Water
It was stated that cholera is transmitted via the gastrointestinal system, through fecal-oral contact. It was emphasized that unchlorinated water contaminated with sewage and wastewater is among the most important sources of transmission.
Cholera Symptoms and Treatment Process
It was noted that the most prominent symptom in cholera patients is diarrhea with the appearance of rice water, along with weakness, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, but no fever is observed. It was reported that the disease, which can be fatal if not intervened early, has a mortality rate of below 1 percent with appropriate treatment.
Diarrhea Cases and Warnings in Turkey
It was announced that the recent increase in diarrhea cases in Turkey has no connection to cholera. Stating that this increase is mostly virus-related and heals within one to two days, warnings were issued against the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
