Israel marks three years since Hamas' October 7 attack

Israel is commemorating the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks—recorded as the deadliest day in its history—with events held across the country. The memorial programs are taking place under intensive security measures following the ceasefire declared in Gaza last year and ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Third Anniversary Memorials

Commemoration events planned across Israel honor the numerous people who lost their lives in the attacks launched from Gaza by Islamist movement-led militants. According to compilations based on official Israeli data, a total of 1,221 people lost their lives in the rocket and armed attacks carried out by Palestinian fighters who crossed the border into southern regions. It is also known that militants took 251 hostages back to Gaza, 44 of whom are currently dead.

Locations of the Ceremonies

A ceremony is planned at Kibbutz Kfar Aza on the Gaza border at 06:29, the hour the attacks began, where militants killed 64 residents and abducted 18 people. Another memorial event will take place at the site of the Nova music festival, where militants killed more than 370 people and abducted dozens of hostages. Additionally, grieving families are organizing a mass gathering in a park in Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening.

Security Measures and Warnings

The memorial events are taking place with heightened security measures, three weeks ahead of the general elections and a week after a thwarted attack targeting a passenger plane flying toward Tel Aviv. The Israeli defense minister announced on Tuesday that, in line with intelligence data regarding potential attack attempts against troops in Gaza on the anniversary, the army has been placed on high alert.

Netanyahu's Statements and Political Developments

Speaking at official memorial ceremonies held on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that there will be no Hamas rule in Gaza. Netanyahu pledged to continue targeting everyone involved in the October 7 attack or holding the hostages.

Casualties and Humanitarian Situation in Gaza

Israel's massive military operation launched in response to Hamas's unprecedented attack left most of Gaza in ruins. According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, more than 74,200 people have lost their lives during this process. Alongside these figures, which are considered reliable by the United Nations, the humanitarian situation in the region remains severe despite the fragile ceasefire declared last October through US mediation, with hundreds of thousands of people continuing to live in tents.

Regional Spillover and Post-Ceasefire Situation

Over the past three years, the Israeli military has expanded its operational impact to different fronts in the Middle East, from clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon to Iran. Since the declaration of the ceasefire, more than 1,430 additional people have lost their lives in operations conducted by Israeli forces in Gaza; the Israeli administration states that it controls more than 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and continues its attacks.
