According to a statement by the Yayoi Kusama Studio, the renowned artist passed away on August 14 at a hospital in Tokyo. No official cause of death was stated.
The studio's statement shared with the public that Kusama continued painting until her final days.
Artistic Career and New York Years
Drawing inspiration from hallucinations in her childhood, the artist moved to New York in 1957, becoming one of the first Japanese women to pursue an art career there.
Kusama's works have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as the Ludwig Museum in Germany.
Cultural Heritage and Awards
Achieving global fame later in life, the artist signed collaborations with major brands such as Louis Vuitton.
In recognition of her contributions to the art world, she was honored with Japan's prestigious Order of Culture in 2016.
