Nepal Demands Climate Justice and Compensation After Disaster
Following devastating floods that caused thousands of deaths, Nepal is demanding twenty million dollars from the international community under the loss and damage fund.
Nepal has called for climate justice following a disaster caused by the collapse of a mountain glacier in the Himalayan region, which resulted in the deaths and disappearances of thousands of people.
Details of the Major Disaster
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, began with the collapse of a mountain glacier. Water and mud floods struck Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts as well as China's Tibet region.
As a result of this devastating event, it has been confirmed that more than thirteen hundred people lost their lives, while over five thousand people remain missing.
International Support and Call for Justice
Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal emphasized that his country is paying the heaviest price for a global crisis it did not create, stating that the support should be seen as justice rather than aid.
The country's president and other officials also made similar statements, drawing attention to responsibility in the global climate crisis.
Application to the United Nations
The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment of Nepal drafted a joint letter to request twenty million dollars in compensation through the United Nations Loss and Damage Fund.
Contributing less than zero point one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, Nepal is extremely vulnerable to climate change due to its Himalayan geography.
Upcoming Summits and National Mourning
Prime Minister Balendra Shah will travel to New York to deliver a speech at the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 24.
While a national day of mourning was declared across the country on Monday to commemorate the victims of the disaster, the demand for climate justice is expected to be a main agenda item at the UN summit.
