A devastating flood following a landslide and glacier collapse on the Nepal-Tibet border destroyed approximately ten percent of Nepal's hydropower capacity, highlighting the major risks of climate change to green energy projects in the region.

Dimensions of the Disaster and Losses

A landslide and glacier collapse on August 26 along the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a devastating flood in the mountain valleys. The disaster resulted in the wiping out of approximately ten percent of the country's total hydropower capacity.

As a result of the incident, twelve hydropower plants were damaged, affecting over four hundred megawatts of operating capacity. Total material damage is estimated to be around 130 billion Nepalese rupees, or approximately 850 million dollars.

Stagnation in Green Energy Targets

While hydroelectric dams are seen as an important solution in the energy-deficit region, changing climatic conditions create new dangers for these projects. The recent flood disaster revealed a vulnerability that could set Nepal's hydropower goals back by five or six years.

The country aimed to significantly increase its production capacity by 2035 and undertake the mission of storing and supplying green energy to neighboring countries such as India and Bangladesh.

Climate Risks in the Himalayas

As rising temperatures destabilize mountainous terrain, projects in the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Andes face severe threats such as glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, and ice-rock avalanches.

This latest disaster clearly demonstrates that risks are increasing regarding the future and costs of green energy projects carried out in one of the world's most vulnerable regions.
