Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Nepalese leader Balendra Shah stated that the devastating floods in the country highlight the dangers of the global climate crisis.
In his speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah emphasized that the recent deadly floods in the country serve as a serious warning for the entire world.
Climate Crisis Warning at the United Nations
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah brought the disaster in his country to the agenda by addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Shah stated that the disaster in August was not merely a local tragedy, but a clear climate warning for the whole world.
Loss of Life and Scientific Explanations
International scientists have scientifically demonstrated that melting permafrost layers and unstable glaciers caused this massive flood.
It was announced that at least 1,400 people lost their lives as a result of the disaster, while numerous others are still missing.
Global Emissions and Economic Devastation
It was officially emphasized that Nepal's share of global heat-trapping gas emissions is less than one-tenth of one percent.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal reported that the disaster caused more than $5 billion in damages, equivalent to approximately 15 percent of the gross domestic product.
Emphasis on International Support and Justice
The Nepalese administration voiced on the international platform that this massive destruction is also a crisis of development and justice.
While the United States announced $31 million in aid for flood rescue efforts, the total aid amount reached $36 million.
