New Strategy from the United Nations: Overshoot Period in Global Warming Target
In a newly published report, the United Nations announced that the 1.5-degree global warming limit will be exceeded in the coming years and unveiled a new overshoot and decline strategy.
According to a report prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme, the world is poised to exceed the 1.5-degree global warming target compared to pre-industrial levels within the next few years. In response, the UN has adopted a new approach aimed at bringing temperatures back down to safe levels by the end of the century.
New Approach to Global Warming Target
With the release of a new UNEP report, the United Nations has officially acknowledged for the first time that the world is preparing to breach the 1.5-degree global warming threshold. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that every fractional increase in temperature will lead to loss of life and damage to ecosystems.
Overshoot, Peak, and Decline Strategy
The report outlines a strategy that could ensure temperatures are brought back down to 1.5 degrees or below by the end of the century. Entitled overshoot, peak, and decline, this roadmap advocates for keeping the period of temperature overshoot as short as possible and immediately reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Joint Combat Against Air Pollution and Climate Crisis
According to reports by the World Meteorological Organization and UNEP, tackling the climate crisis and air pollution together rather than separately will yield much greater benefits. It is emphasized that implementing integrated actions could prevent millions of premature deaths by 2050.
Nepal Demands Compensation After Flood Disaster
Following the devastating floods in late August in Nepal that resulted in numerous deaths and the destruction of thousands of homes, the country has demanded $20 million in climate compensation. While Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal emphasized shared responsibility, UN officials warned against the impacts of El Nino and rising temperatures.
