It is stated that the Precision Strike Missiles produced by Lockheed Martin were used in a combat environment for the first time, highlighting the dangers they pose near residential areas.
A report by the conflict monitoring organization Airwars and interviews with weapons experts reveal that the missiles scatter metal ball bearings over a wide area.
The Attack in the City of Lamerd
It was determined that three missiles hitting the southern city of Lamerd on February 28 caused the deaths of civilians located 50 meters away from the point of explosion.
According to Iranian officials, as a result of these explosions targeting a sports complex and two residential neighborhoods, at least 21 civilians, including seven children, lost their lives.
Working Mechanism of the Weapon
The Precision Strike Missile is designed to detonate in the air, hurling tens of thousands of dense metal fragments and ball bearings at high speed in all directions.
Photographs, videos, and satellite imagery reviewed by Airwars and verified by the Associated Press show that buildings, streets, and vehicles sustained heavy damage.
Statement by the US Military
While the US military confirmed that these missiles were fired into Iranian territory, it maintained that they did not launch any attack targeting the city of Lamerd.
American military officials stated that their forces do not target civilians in any way and that these claims are being investigated.
