Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi: Iranian People Are Paying the Price for War

Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist Narges Mohammadi stated that the Iranian people are paying a very heavy price due to economic misery, U.S. sanctions, and internal oppression.

The Price of War and Economic Crises

Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi stated that economic difficulties in the country and U.S. sanctions leave no room for the public to breathe.

Mohammadi expressed that the Iranian people are struggling with multiple crises simultaneously and are paying a heavy price for the ongoing processes.

Prison Conditions and Memoirs

Mohammadi, 54, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, managed to smuggle her memoir written while in prison out through other inmates.

French, German, and editions in nine other languages of the book are meeting readers this month, while English and Persian versions are planned for publication next year.

Detention Process and Health Issues

The activist, who was detained in December while giving a speech at the commemoration ceremony of human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi in Mashhad, reported that she was subjected to violence by security forces.

Having received a blow to the head and been held in solitary confinement for two months, Mohammadi was hospitalized after losing consciousness on May 1 and was later released on bail.

Prison Sentences and Future Uncertainty

Narges Mohammadi, who has served a total of 10 years in prison to date, noted that she has a 44-year prison sentence handed down against her and is awaiting judicial decisions.

Currently having her sentence suspended, Mohammadi continues to face the risk of returning to prison at any moment.
