Over One Million People in Vietnam Need Rabies Prophylaxis Every Year
While the Vietnamese Ministry of Health has set a target to eliminate dog-mediated rabies deaths by 2030, it announced that most deaths stem from delayed vaccination and improper interventions.
In Vietnam, more than one million people require prophylaxis following rabies exposure every year, while deaths continue to occur despite preventive measures and vaccines.
Preventable Nature of Rabies and Loss of Life
Although rabies is a preventable disease, it continues to claim human lives every year. In the country, 77 deaths due to rabies were recorded in 2025, and 55 people lost their lives in the first nine months of 2026.
Rising Vaccine Costs and the Global Picture
In 2025, the cost of purchasing rabies vaccines and serum exceeded 2 trillion VND, representing a threefold increase compared to the previous period. On a global scale, approximately 59,000 deaths occur annually in more than 150 countries, with children accounting for 40 percent of the victims.
Main Causes of Deaths and Barriers to Access
Despite the availability of vaccines and effective preventive measures, deaths occur due to a lack of vaccination, delayed vaccination, improper wound management, or the use of unproven treatments. Access to services remains a barrier in mountainous and remote areas.
2030 Targets and Precautions to Take
The Ministry of Health aims to completely eliminate dog-mediated rabies deaths by 2030. Experts emphasize that after a bite, wounds should be washed with soap and water and medical help must be sought immediately.
