The death of Darya Shipilova, a technician at the Plague Control Institute in Russia's Siberia region, from pneumonic plague following a laboratory accident has sparked widespread epidemic concerns and quarantine measures in the region.

Accident Occurring in the Laboratory

Darya Shipilova, a technician working at the Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov in Russia's Siberia region, accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing from medical personnel.

Disease Course and Death

Contracting pneumonic plague—which can be fatal if not treated early—as a result of the broken test tube, Shipilova was hospitalized with severe pneumonia symptoms on September 29 and passed away on October 1 after being placed on a ventilator.

Quarantine and Closed Hospitals

Following this suspicious death, hundreds of people were placed under quarantine, while it was reported that five hospitals were closed to track contacts and public events in Irkutsk were canceled.

Officials' Statements

Irkutsk Regional Governor Igor Kobzev initially stated that there was a suspicion of a particularly dangerous infection, urging the calm of the public, and noted in a statement on Sunday that this was a case of pneumonia of unknown etiology.

International Monitoring

U.S. officials stated that the government is closely monitoring the suspected plague outbreak in Russia and the quarantine process being carried out in connection with it.
