A group of demonstrators gathered in front of the Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul to protest days of LGBTQ+ focused operations and demand the release of detained activists.
Surrounding the group, police teams intervened against the demonstrators who were chanting slogans and opening banners, detaining numerous individuals.
Comprehensive Operation Targeting LGBTQ+ Groups
In operations carried out across Turkey on Sunday, numerous LGBTQ+ groups and individuals were targeted, association buildings were raided, and popular meeting spots were inspected.
Authorities also blocked access to websites belonging to these organizations, and it was reported that a large number of people were detained as part of the operations.
Statement Emphasizing "Family" from the Minister of Justice
Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek stated that the purpose of the operations was to protect children, the institution of the family, and public order, while sharing details of the operations.
It was announced that the operation, named "My Family is Safe," targeted hundreds of suspects, numerous associations, and businesses.
Human Rights Criticism from the Council of Europe
Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty, located in Strasbourg, France, expressed his concerns regarding the raids and detentions that took place.
O'Flaherty stated that references to family values or the protection of children cannot constitute a legal justification for human rights restrictions.
