According to a ProPublica report, Russian leader Vladimir Putin's ally Umar Kremlev paid for island rentals and fireworks expenses as a gift for the wedding celebrations of Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump. It was stated that there is no business relationship between the parties and that it is solely a personal friendship.
Wedding Celebrations in the Bahamas
After getting married on a private island in the Bahamas, the couple held a two-day celebration on another island costing approximately $100,000 per night. A portion of the expenses incurred during the celebrations was covered by Putin's ally.
Fireworks and Island Expenses
According to the published report, Umar Kremlev covered some of the party's costs, including a fireworks display worth approximately $70,000. Kremlev also attended part of the wedding celebrations.
Kremlev's Connections
Umar Kremlev heads the International Boxing Association, which is financed by the state-backed Gazprom energy company. The Olympic Committee suspended this group due to the failure to disclose ties with the Russian energy giant.
Statement on Personal Friendship
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. stated that the president's son and Kremlev are personal friends and that there is no commercial relationship between them. Kremlev's office also confirmed that the two have a friendly relationship.
Other Attendees at the Wedding
Among those attending the wedding were the US president's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner. Kushner previously served in various diplomatic negotiations on behalf of the US.
