Qatar's Mediation Initiative to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that diplomatic contacts with Oman and Pakistan are ongoing to open the Strait of Hormuz to navigation and reduce regional tension following the war between the US and Iran.

The Crisis in the Strait of Hormuz

Majed Al-Ansari, the spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned that any initiatives regarding the normalization of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz could further escalate tensions in the region.

The war that broke out between the US and Iran and the subsequent clashes caused transportation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the vital arteries of global maritime trade, to come to a near-complete standstill.

Impact on Global Trade and Energy Markets

Before the military operations launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, it was known that approximately 25 percent of world maritime trade passed through this strategic strait.

During the conflict process, the blockade imposed by the US on Iranian ports, along with Iran's attacks and mining activities in the waterway, caused global energy prices to rise rapidly.

Search for Temporary Routes and Talks

While the Iranian and Omani sides are discussing the possibility of opening a temporary trade route, the Tehran administration conditions this step on the US first returning to the memorandum of understanding signed in June.

Negatively affected economically by the war, Qatar intensified its mediation activities within this scope, carrying out a visit to Tehran with the participation of Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
