Recent Polls in France Highlight Far-Left Leader Melenchon as a Contender for the Runoff

Recent polls published in France have revealed that far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon has the potential to make it to the runoff in the upcoming presidential elections, and that polarization within the voter base is increasing.

Results of the IFOP Poll

According to research conducted by IFOP between August 24 and 25, Jean-Luc Melenchon, the leader of the France Unbowed movement, finishes the first round in second place in three out of seven tested scenarios, securing the right to advance to the runoff.

While Melenchon is projected to receive between 16 percent and 19 percent of the vote in the first round, far-right candidate Marine Le Pen is expected to reach a vote share between 33 percent and 35 percent.

Runoff Scenarios

According to poll data, in a potential runoff matchup, Marine Le Pen is estimated to win against Melenchon by taking 67 percent of the vote.

Additionally, in four different scenarios in the IFOP poll, center-right candidates and former ministers of Emmanuel Macron rank ahead of Melenchon in the first round.

Electoral Process and Past Experiences

Another poll published earlier this week by Toluna Harris Interactive also showed that Melenchon could be a probable runoff contender.

Having previously run for the presidency three times in 2012, 2017, and 2022, Melenchon has failed to make it to the runoff in any of the elections so far.
