Pat Clohessy was widely known as the man who guided Robert de Castella to marathon victory at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki. The duo left behind one of the most successful athlete-coach partnerships in Australian athletics history.

Running Background

Before becoming a successful coach, Clohessy was a prominent distance runner, winning back-to-back NCAA championships while competing for the University of Houston. He claimed the AAU three-mile title in 1963 and finished third at the World Games in Helsinki the same year.

Birth of a Legendary Partnership

After concluding his running career, Clohessy turned to teaching and began coaching the track team at Xavier College in Melbourne. It was there that he met a 14-year-old Robert de Castella, laying the foundation for a partnership that would last for many years.

International Success and Records

The pairing of Clohessy and de Castella achieved numerous significant milestones, including a world marathon record, victories at the Boston and Rotterdam marathons, and medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Clohessy served as Australia's distance running coach at the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, as well as the 1983 and 1987 World Athletics Championships.
