Russian Drone Strike on Science Academy in Kyiv Causes Casualties

A daytime Russian drone strike in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv targeted the building of the National Academy of Sciences. At least one person was killed in the incident, and three others were injured, including a former high-ranking security official.

Strike Hits Academy Building

A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle struck the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on Monday. Flames rose from the historic building following the explosion, while employees inside attempted to escape through first- and second-floor windows.

Casualties and Statements from Officials

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that at least one person lost their life and three others were injured in the attack. Academy President Anatoliy Zagorodny condemned the strike, noting that numerous personnel were inside at the moment of the explosion.

Among the injured was Volodymyr Horbulin, the first vice-president of the academy and a former high-ranking security official.

Other Targets and Reactions

In another Russian drone strike on the same day that hit a nearby private medical center, at least one person was also killed. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the targeting of a scientific institution during working hours.

Meanwhile, a Russian jet-powered drone crashed in western Ukraine near the Polish border, prompting Warsaw authorities to go on high alert. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Western countries to increase pressure on Russia.
