Saudi-Backed Forces Recapture Areas Around Bab el-Mandeb Strait in Yemen
Internationally recognized government forces have seized strategically important regions following an operation conducted with air support.
Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen have recaptured critical areas around the Bab el-Mandeb strait from Iran-backed Houthis.
Recapture of Strategic Regions
According to Yemeni officials, forces allied with the internationally recognized government regained control of the town of Dhubab, just north of the strait, as well as the towns of Bab and Hadeid.
Air-Supported Military Operation
The government's advance was carried out as part of a major offensive launched in the early hours under air cover. Coalition spokesperson Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki stated that one hundred warplanes provided support to secure the strategic strait.
Clashes and Casualties
The operation followed the Houthis' advance in southwestern Yemen and their capture of the town of Turbah. Numerous casualties from both sides were reported in and around Taiz.
International Statements and Attack Claims
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government have the right to defend themselves. Meanwhile, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported that they carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi energy facilities.
