Siemens Energy to Produce Turbines for Small Modular Reactors in the UK
Steam turbine components required for Rolls-Royce SMR projects will be manufactured at Germany-based Siemens Energy's facility in Newcastle.
Siemens Energy will manufacture critical steam turbine components at its Newcastle facility in the UK for the first three small modular reactors to be built by Rolls-Royce SMR as part of the Gwyndod project in Anglesey, Wales.
Production Plan at the Newcastle Facility
Key steam turbine components, including high-pressure turbines and valve housings, will be manufactured at Siemens Energy's historic facility in northeast England. This development will support more than 550 jobs and create new opportunities.
Historic Industrial Heritage
The facility in Newcastle has played a critical role in the UK's energy infrastructure since 1889. The plant also built the steam turbine for Calder Hall in West Cumbria, the world's first commercial nuclear power station, which began operations in 1956.
Gwyndod Project and SMR Details
The Rolls-Royce SMR design, based on a small pressurized water reactor, will provide uninterrupted base load generation for at least 60 years. Ninety percent of the reactor will be built under factory conditions, reducing project risk.
Forward-Looking Cooperation
This agreement marks the first time such components will be produced for small modular reactors in Europe. Officials emphasize that this step is an important milestone in building a UK-led nuclear supply chain.
